Building factor (BF) - a factor expressing the ratio of power loss dissipated in the magnetic core of a fully built transformer the the power loss of the raw electrical steel specified at the same operating point.
| Building factor BF | |
|---|---|
| $$BF = \frac{P_{core}}{P_{steel}}$$ | (unitless) |
| where: $P_{core}$ - total core loss (W), $P_{steel}$ - total loss (W) of electrical steel loss, calculated as the specific power loss $P$ (W/kg) multiplied by the weight of the core in $w$ (kg), so that $P_{steel} = P·w$ (W) | |
A typical value of BF = 1.15 can be obtained for a well designed transformer made of grain-oriented electrical steel.1) Its value can vary depending on the configuration of the magnetic core, mechanical stresses added during assembly and steel cutting, etc.2)3)
