Stan Zurek, Shielded inductor, Encyclopedia Magnetica, http://www.e-magnetica.pl/doku.php/shielded_inductor |
Shielded inductor - a type of inductor which is designed and constructed specifically to contain the magnetic field inside its enclosure, so that other nearby components are not affected.
S. Zurek, E-Magnetica.pl, CC-BY-4.0
Non-shielded inductor - magnetic field closes through the surrounding air and can affect any nearby components

Powder core inductor with very good shielding and low thermal resistance (whole winding is completely embedded in the powder core)

S. Zurek, E-Magnetica.pl, CC-BY-4.0
Shielded inductor with winding polarity marked with the printed semi-circle denoting the start of the winding; the outer ferrite was cracked to reveal the multi-layer winding underneath
